Onkel Adolph

Onkel Adolph was designed and built by Willy von Hacht, sailing for the “NRV” (Norddeutscher Regatta Verein). It has been suggested that Onkel Adolph was named after the sponsor and President of the NRV at this time: Mister Adolph Burmeester. However Onkel Adolph’s first owner was Adolphe Tietgens, a partner of the trading and shipping firm Tietgens and Robertson. He was a member of the Hamburg parliament.

In early records, the boat name has been variously misspelt as Onkel Adolf, including in Lloyd’s Register of Yachts.

Onkel Adolph won the first Metre Class race in Meulan on the Seine near Paris in May 1907. The race, then known as the Coupe Internationale du Cercle de la Voile de Paris, later became the One Ton Cup.

She sailed in German Democratic Republic (DDR, East Germany) sailing with the sail number DDR 333.

In 2016 she was taken to Carinthia in southern Austria and significantly restored at the shipyard “Alto Adriatico”.

She now sails around Europe and mostly on Lake Woerthersee, Austria.

The restorations of Onkel Adolph were covered by a Classic Boat Magazine article by Dieter Loibner in September 2018.

Onkel Adolph features in our Six Metre Story “The Six Metres in Spain” which was published to celebrate the 2022 World Championships held in Sanxenxo, Spain. You can read the story here.
