Marga
Marga was commissioned by a Mr. Erik Ahlström. She was designed by Zake Westin and built by Åbo Båtvarv in Finland in 1933. She competed that year in the Scandinavian Gold Cup and took part in numerous regattas in Sweden, Finland and Bermuda.
During the Second World War, a Russian plane dropped a bomb into waters near to Marga while she was sailing eastwards from Helsinki, severely damaging her bow. The boat was rescued and underwent significant repairs to restore its original state and performance.
Her history is written in the 1992 book Sexornas Jakt, a Finnish history of Six Metres (Ingvard Liewendahl et al).
Marga was then sold to Canada and then to the United States.
In the late 1950s, Marga was brought to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where her sail number changed from L33 to BL33. She then moved to the city of Salvador, until in the 1970s, when she returned to Niterói, in the state of Rio de Janeiro under the name Lycka VI. The boat was given as a gift to Lars Schmidt Grael from his brother, Torben, who temporarily named her Guida. After learning about the history of the boat, the original name, Marga, was restored. Marga remains under Lars’ ownership and actively participates in regattas in Rio de Janeiro.
