Online Six Metre resources
January 20th, 2022
Ours is not the only source of historical information on the International Six Metres online. We try not to replicate what is already available online on our website; to do so would be an impossible task.
To help with your research we have put together a list of the websites we go to most often to research the history of the class. The list is not exhaustive, and a thorough search is often fruitful.

---|---|---|
North American 6 Metre Association | Website for the North American Association. This website contains large amounts of historical information on the North American fleet. N.B. The North American fleet includes boats in the USA and Canada. | http://www.6mrnorthamerica.com/ |

Other useful resources
There are many of other resources that are not specific to the Six Metres that we find useful when we are researching the topic. Here are some of our favourites.
Name | Description | URL |
---|---|---|
Lloyd’s Register of Yachts and The Yachtsman | The Association of Yachting Historians, based in the UK, has fully digitised the Lloyd’s Register of Yachts and The Yachtsman magazine. Both are invaluable sources of historical information for anyone researching yachting history. Copies can be purchased from the AYH website. | http://www.yachtinghistorians.org/AYH-projects |
Google newspaper archive | Google has made hundreds of historic newspapers freely available. The papers come from all around the world and are extremely useful when researching specific events. Other paid for newspaper archives are available if Google cannot provide what you need. | https://news.google.com/newspapers |
Google Books | Similarly, Google has made digital copies of books and magazines available online. It is always worth a search here, as sailing magazines such as "Yachting" (1980-2002), "Motor Boating" (1908-2011) are available as full digital scans. | https://books.google.com |
Final word
Don’t forget to make use of your nearest library, museum, archives or even yacht clubs for your research. These resources can often give you access to documents, books and information that are not available online.
