Group of Six Metre boats racing downwind, 1931

Archive Item Type:

Black and white photograph of Lucie (US55) Cresta (K32) Bathsheba (K35) Petite Aile IV (F7) Cupidon Fou (F38) and Felma (K2) racing downwind, past Egypt Point to the west of Cowes in 1931.

It is highly likely that this photograph was taken in early August during Cowes Week. Newspaper reports record when “the breeze had freshened slightly” (Source: The Portsmouth Evening News, 05 August 1931), all of these boats competed for a cup that was presented by Major the Hon. Sir John Ward, an Army officer, equerry to King George V and the original owner of the Six Metre Jean.

Cowes Week has always attracted boats from around the world, and this example is no different. Cresta, Bathsheba and Felma were British boats, but Petite Aile IV and Cupidon Fou were French, and Lucie from the United States.
